Welcome To STBC

Tonglen Group Photo

The Shakyamuni Tibetan Buddhist Center is a non-sectarian Tibetan Buddhist group based in Portland, Oregon.  Our center was founded in 2003 by the Venerable Geshe Kalsang Damdul, Assistant Director of the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Dharamsala, India, under the auspices of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

We are dedicated to the study and practice of Tibetan Buddhism, in the tradition of the Gelugpa School, founded by Lama Je Tsong Khapa in the 15th century. We welcome practitioners from all lineages.

What's New at STBC:

The Intensive Course: We are sorry to report that the Intensive Course, scheduled to be held 9/29/08 to 10/04/08, on "The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way" will need to be postponed, due to lack of a translator, until Fall Semester of next year. Kuntse Rinpoche will be offering this course in September, 2009 with a qualified translator.

INSTEAD, for our final week with Rinpoche, after conferring with Geshela, Rinpoche suggests that STBC students attend the following pujas and practices that week, to strengthen our Center and help it to thrive, and benefit our teachers and all of our students:

Monday, Sept. 29th "The 21 Praises to Tara Practice" 7 to 9 pm Venerable Arya Tara helps us in our daily lives, blessing our community and looking out for our members. This practice is to thank the deity, and ask her for her continued help.

Wednesday, Oct. 1st "The Vajrasattva Practice" 7 to 9 pm The Vajrasattva is a very powerful purification practice. It helps to purify negativities and remove obstacles, helping to cleanse the negative karma of individual practitioners as well as the collective karma of the Center and all of its members.

Sunday, Oct. 5th The Guru Puja Tsok 12 noon to 2 pm (For Sunday’s puja, if you’d like, you may bring flowers, fruit, cookies, etc., for tsok offerings. Then, a Potluck Dinner: 2 – 4 pm Following the Puja on Sunday, we would like to have a potluck dinner to say goodby to Kuntse Rinpoche, as he leaves for Kathmandu by the end of the week.

All of these pujas and practices will be held at the Bodhi Tree Center.

Please be patient with us. We are in the middle of updating the website so not all the information has had an opportunity to be posted. Please check back soon.

We need your help! STBC is still growing and needs stable volunteers to help. If you have some time to help consistently or occasionally, please e-mail info@stbcportland.org with what you would like to help with and any skills that you would like to offer.
